Non-governmental organisations and other development partners have been asked to decentralise their activities from urban to rural areas in order to benefit the people at the grassroots.

The Kibaale county MP, Frank Tumwebaze, said some organisations spend most of their funds on capacity-building seminars for people in urban areas instead of funding physical infrastructure like health centres and schools to serve the rural population.

“The bigger percentage of Ugandans lives in the rural areas, hence the need for charities to concentrate in those areas.” He was speaking during a visit to Kabuga Health Centre in Kamwenge sub-county, Kamwenge district over the weekend.

The centre was built by the Indian community under the World Malayalee Council, a non-governmental organisation based in India.

The charity has also built another centre in Kebisoni sub-county in Rukungiri district.

Tumwebaze was accompanied by the council’s African region president, Jacob Poovathoor.

The Indian prime minister, Dr. Mohan Singh, is expected to hand over the health centres to the Government next week.
