THE Police is phasing out the maroon uniform hitherto worn by Special Police Constables (SPCs) countrywide. “People in various parts of the country had developed a negative attitude towards the uniform. They thought SPCs were local defence personnel yet the latter wear blue uniform,” the Police spokesperson, Asan Kasingye, said recently.

The maroon uniform was to be worn by the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) personnel in northern Uganda but it was later adopted by the SPCs.

The SPCs will now wear khaki shirts and trousers with the words SPC at the back. The ASTU staff will adopt a brown camouflage uniform.

A few senior Police officers, like the deputy inspector general of Police, Julius Odwee, currently based in the north have been wearing the maroon uniform.

Kasingye said Odwee wanted to identify with his team.

Other Police uniforms include khaki uniforms for operations, navy blue for major ceremonies and khaki with white sleeves for officers-in-charge of traffic.

Others are light blue for office work, red ceremonial uniform for the police brass band and black overalls for the fire brigade.
