ORPHANS have been encouraged to read hard and excel in their academics if they are to attract more sponsors.

“If you do not perform well in class and succeed, people helping you may lose the morale and stop assisting other children,” the Rakai LC5 vice-chairperson, Charles Lubega Ziriddamu, said.

Lubega was handing over Science, English and Mathematics textbooks to students sponsored by the Ssuubi/Seed Uganda Research Centre at Matale Catholic Church in Kalisizo.

The centre is coordinated by Dr. Fred Ssewamala, a professor of social sciences at Columbia University in New York, USA.

Ssewamala said the project aids over 400 children in 37 primary and secondary schools in Rakai, Masaka, Sembabule and Wakiso districts.

Under the project, a student is facilitated to open a savings account either in Centenary Rural Development Bank Kyotera branch or DFCU Bank Kampala branch.

A student has to save money not exceeding sh15,000 monthly. Ssewamala doubles the money to raise fees for the student.

“These children have to learn that the culture of saving is important,” Ssewamala said.
