MITYANA
Five people were arrested in Busimbi sub-county over the weekend for allegedly stealing railway slippers. The district Police commander, Moses Otaala Obbo, identified the suspects as Henry Ssonko, Joseph Kasumba, Kassim Ssenyonjo, Erisa Daka and Deziranta Batta, all residents of Mpanga village. “We arrested them with a number of railway slippers, which they were about to load on a vehicle.” He said the suspects would be charged with vandalism.

Ex-policeman netted

Patrick Ekot, a former Police officer, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly breaking into his colleague’s store and stealing a bicycle. The southern region Police Commander, Andrew Sorowen, told The New Vision that Ekot stole Emmanuel Galiwango’s bicycle and sold it to Abbas Kafuma, a bodaboda cyclist in Nyendo. “When we arrested Kafuma, he claimed to have bought the bicycle from Meddie, a businessman, at sh98,000.” He added that Meddie in turn said he bought the bicycle from Ekot at sh70,000. Sorowen said Ekot had earlier been dismissed over indiscipline.

6 suspects detained

The Rapid Response Unit arrested eight people who suspected to be highway robbers. Capt. Stephen Rwakanuma, who led the operation, said they recovered an SMG gun and 60 bullets. The suspects include Elison Bagumo, Wilson Mashereka,Moses Tembo, Charles Bwamabale , Tadeo Ssalongo, Asiimwe Halid and Habib.

Man gets 6 yrs for rape
MBARARA
The High Court has sent a man to six years in jail for raping a 50-year-old woman. Court heard that Ronald Kibiira, 18, committed the offence in Isingiro district on February 18. He said he was under the influence of alcohol.
