The Catholic Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana has elected new leaders.
The 14 leaders, to serve a four-year term, were sworn in during a mass to mark the Diocesan Day on Sunday at Kiyinda Cathedral.

Bishop Joseph Anthony Zziwa urged the team to ensure that they help the Christians strengthen their faith through more evangelisation.

Some of the leaders include Mark Gingo Kaberenge, the head of the laity, Margaret Kawooya as treasurer, Gonzaga Ssebulime as development officer and John Baptist Mubiru in charge of education.

Zziwa called upon parents to encourage their children to engage in holy marriages.

“Youth say they shy away from holy matrimony because you charge high bride prices. But you must support them to legally get married in Church other than trying to get wealth from them.”

On the issue of education, the bishop said the diocese would soon start a model school in order to improve the quality of education in the area.

The diocese also congratulated Bishop Emeritus of

Kiyinda-Mityana Joseph Mukwaya on celebrating 25 years as bishop.
Mukwaya was the second bishop to lead the diocese after Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala.

Zziwa gave Mukwaya a gift and delivered blessings from Pope Benedict XVI.

The gift was the Pope’s portrait with a message in Latin.

Mukwaya commended the Christians for the love and care they showed him during his stay in the diocese.

According to the diocese’s 2007 report read by the Diocesan patrol coordinator, Rev, Fr, Razarus Kiggundu, the Church had supported several people with disabilities.

He added that the Church also sponsored a number of orphans in the area.
