THE Mityana North MP, Dr. Gordon Ssematiko, is concerned about the increasing cases of defilement in the area. He suggested that defilers be hanged, saying the seven-year jail term was not enough.

“More and more men are killing our young girls. They not only persuade them into sex but also rape them. We need to save the situation soon,” he said on Saturday during celebrations to commemorate the World AIDS Day at Kikandwa Health Centre in Kikandwa sub-county, Mityana district.

“Defilers spread HIV/AIDS and destroy the future of young girls. With such people, all the Government efforts to fight AIDS will not reap any fruit,” Ssematiko said.

According to Ssematiko, most defilers, rapists and murderers are drug addicts.

“Recently, a woman in Busujju and another in Kikandwa died as a result of marijuana. I appeal to the security officials to fight this vice (drug abuse),” he said.

The resident district commissioner, Harriet Kagaba, pledged to work hand-in-hand with local leaders to fight the crime.

Meanwhile, Dr. Francis Kigongo, the head of Kyantungo Health Centre, has urged parents to guard their children against defilers.

Speaking at the open day of Mityana Town Parents School on Sunday, he said girls engage in sexual intercourse at a tender age.

“They bring an eight-year-old girl for medical examination after being defiled, but you find that she has not been hurt. This means that she has been engaging in sexual intercourse.

Kigongo added: “It is a pity to hear that a 40-year-old man sleeps with a 10-year-old girl. This is what is happening in our district today!”
