MP raps state over schools,
GULU

Aswa County MP Reagan Okumu has castigated the Government for focusing mainly on Kampala schools and institutions and forgetting about the government-aided institutions up-country.

He was touring Uganda College of Commerce (UCC) Pakwach recently.

The boys’s hall of residence has been abandoned by the students because it is on the verge of collapsing.

All the male students have been forced to evacuate the hall after it developed cracks. They are now renting huts in the suburbs of Pakwach town.

The student leaders, who met Okumu, complained that even the government-sponsored students were renting grass-thatched huts in the town.

Diocece to build model school
MITYANA

Kiyinda Mityana Diocese has embarked on a campaign o improve the quality of education, in primary schools. The Rev. Dr Joseph Anthony Zziwa, the bishop, said they were finalising the plans to build a model school in the diocese.

Zziwa, who was speaking at the diocesan day celebrations last week, at the Kiyinda cathedral, said they were promised to receive support from friends abroad, to run the project.

He said they are yet to select the sub-county where to allocate the school from one of the four districts, which the diocese covers.

The districts are Mpigi, Mityana, Mubende and Kiboga. Zziwa said the school is one of many projects the diocese has put up to improve the quality of education.

The diocesan Pastoral Coordinator, Fr. Lazarus Kiggundu, said the diocese has several classroom blocks.

Utilise the vacation
DURING this time of the year, many students feel it is time to relax and have fun, forgetting that next year they will be continuing with academics.

It is true that PLE, O and A level finalists need a rest after months of hard work. But many seem to forget just how much there is to learn, experience and give to the world.

There are opportunities during school vacations that can help build a student, whichever level there are at.

Some are formal and others informal. Some institutions help school leavers to acquire skills like computer applications.

At Makerere University Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, they offer various computer packages like word, excel, access and Internet.

This can help students be prepared for the education ahead. Charges range from sh60,000 to sh100,000. You can also study languages like French and German.
