MEMBERS of Parliament should plan early for their retirement to avoid frustration after leaving politics.
The executive director of the Uganda Investment Authority, Prof. Maggie Kigozi, advised the legislators that “politics is not a professional career, but a call to serve the nation,” adding that time comes when the call ceases.

“Although MPs enact laws, set policies and approve budgets, time comes when they retire and life has to continue,” Kigozi said.

Kigozi, who was speaking on the role of parliamentarians in investment promotion at Imperial Royale Hotel Kampala on Friday, said she regretted that some MPs retire from politics without making viable investment plans.

She advised them to create employment opportunities in their respective constituencies.

“Promote economic development in your constituencies. The electorate believes in you. MPs are investment ambassadors at the grass-root,” she explained.
Kigozi urged the legislators to research about the private business sector, before criticising it.

The authority, she added, had registered another company ‘Indian Reliance Telecomm’ to offer mobile telecommunication services in Uganda.
It becomes the sixth mobile telecommunication company in addition to Celtel, MTN (U), uganda telecom, Hits and Warid telecom.

“We brought the private sector business people to interact with the MPs, share experiences and learn the problems affecting the private investor,” she added
The MPs said some of the foreign investors do not follow the labour laws and mistreat their employees.

The Association of European Parliamentarians for Africa sponsored the workshop, which attracted private business personalities to share views with the legislators.
