BUSHENYI district vice-chairman, Benon Karyaija, has asked sub-county chiefs to carry out research on the effects of the abolition of graduated tax on service delivery. Karyaija was opening a five-day workshop on reproductive health at Katungu Mothers’ Union Centre in Bushenyi town.

“You should establish how many children have been produced in every village since the tax was scrapped,” he said.
The workshop for sub-county chiefs, LC3 chairpersons and community development workers from Bumbeire, Kakanju and Kyeizooba sub-counties was organised by Reproductive Health Uganda.

Karyaija said when the tax existed, men used to travel to Kampala to work in order to pay the tax, but now people are not bothered.

“You need to find out whether the children are going to school. Has the nutrition changed? Has domestic violence reduced or increased?”

Karyaija said such research would help in poverty alleviation programmes.
