THE Inspector General of Government (IGG) yesterday failed to appear before the parliamentary committee on legal affairs. The committee chairman, Peter Nyombi (NRM), said the members had summoned Faith Mwondha to discuss how to resolve the Nyanza Textiles (Nytil) minority shareholders’ demand for $8m (about sh14b) out of court.

Nyombi said they wanted to save the Government from paying the colossal sum of money.

The MP said Mwondha wrote to the committee, saying it was subjudice to discuss a matter which was before the courts.

Mwondha had earlier stopped the payment, alleging fraud in the award.
In 1996, the Government sold Nytil without compensating the minority share- holders, who are now demanding about sh14b in principal interest and other costs.

The 120 minority shareholders petitioned Parliament to intervene in the matter
“We represent the tax-payers. Every day which goes by, the money keeps on increasing. We can’t sit and wait to see the Government losing money in compensation.

“If she has refused to appear before us, we shall implement the law,” Nyombi warned.

He then explained that according to the law, if any official failed to appear before a parliamentary committee, the MPs had powers to arrest that person.

Some of the minority shareholders include the president of the Uganda People’s Congress party, Miria Obote, Prof. Senteza Kajubi, former minister Paul Etiang, Gordon Sentiba, former Bank of Uganda governor Robert Elangot, Eng. James Zikusooka, MP Abraham Byandala and UPC stalwart Adoko Nekyon.
