FOUR former Makerere University Mass Communication students have won the Cranimer Mugerwa and Tebere-Mudin commemorative awards. The awards were sponsored by The New Vision and Daily Monitor, respectively.
The awards were given out on Thursday at the Annual Media Convention (AMC) at Hotel Africana.

Mugerwa who died in 2001 was a photojournalist with The New Vision, while Richard Tebere and Rashid Mudin were sports journalists with Daily Monitor. The two perished in a car accident in 1998.

Joseph Kariuki, who was the best photojournalism student for the last three years, won the Cranimer Mugerwa award comprising sh0.5m, a plaque and a six-month internship at The New Vision.

Gloria Sebikari, Winnie Namata and Bonny Apunyu were the best students overall for 2004/2005, 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 respectively. They each got sh0.5m plus a certificate.

The head of Mass Communication department, Dr. George Lugalambi, thanked the sponsors for motivating journalism students to work harder.

Handing out the awards, The assistant news editor in charge regional news and newspapers at The New Vision, Kenneth Oluka, praised the late Mugerwa as resilient and hardworking.
