Matovu in narrow escape
RALLYING-TANZANIA-BASED Ugandan co-driver Moses Matovu narrowly survived a crash that killed his driver Mohammed Bakhressa in the Zanzibar rally yesterday. The Tanzanian champion Bakhressa died on the spot while Matovu emerged out of the Subaru wreckage alive. “They hit a triple caution jump and when the car landed there was a kid on the road. In the process of saving the kid he hit an electricity pole and the car rolled for 100metres. I think the helmet went off and his head hit the roll-cage,” a devastated Riyaz Kurji told The New Vision.

Masindi wins
SOCCER-MASINDI Young Stars Football Academy has had a fruitful trip to Kampala, beating Edgar Academy 9-2. Lawrence Dramani hit the net four times while Henry Tumusiime scored thrice to beef up Julius Atugonza and Nasur Gatete’s goals. “But they were older than our boys and we have just regrouped for the holiday training”, said Edgar coach, Dan Mubiru.

Akope flops
GOLF-PLAYING in the lucrative 2008 Asian Tour proved a tall order for Ugandan professional golfers Deo Akope and Godfrey Mande. Akope and Mande’s dream came to a halt when they failed to make the cut in qualifying tournament in Malaysia at the weekend. The Ugandans scored an aggregate of 152 over two rounds to share 158th position with four others. Only 89 of the 186 competitors made the cut. Australian Vincent Khua, Briton Joe Templer and Thailand’s Panuawat Muenley shared 158th place with the Ugandans.
