THE newly-elected Bugweri MP, Abdu Katuntu, has pledged to work with President Yoweri Museveni to develop the constituency.

“I have no option but to work with the President and he also has no option but to work with me, because we are both elected leaders by the people,” he said on Friday.

Katuntu, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate, won the hotly-contested by-election on Thursday, polling 14,704 votes. His arch-rival, the third deputy premier, Kirunda Kivejinja (NRM), garnered 12,829 votes.

“I have proved that I have total support of the people. I deserved over 30% votes.”
He said he managed to win despite the Government machinery, backed by ministers and district NRM heavyweights combing the villages for support.

Katuntu added that the results proved that Museveni’s three-day presence in the constituency had little impact.
On reconciliation with Kivejinja, Katuntu said: “I can’t reconcile with Kivenjinja over election violence and buying votes. There is nothing to reconcile over violence and intimidating people.”

The by-election followed a court ruling that Kivejinja intimidated and bribed voters in the 2006 polls.
