AN art exhibition for primary and secondary schools coloured the World AIDS Day in Masindi. The three-day exhibition, which ran from Thursday to Saturday, drew participants from all over the district.

AN art exhibition for primary and secondary schools coloured the World AIDS Day in Masindi. The three-day exhibition, which ran from Thursday to Saturday, drew participants from all over the district.
The Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) staff working with the district education department organised an art contest for children to compete in depicting an anti-HIV/AIDS message.
Children with special needs were given chance to compete with the rest.
VSO staff said co-curricular activities such as athletics, scouting and music leave out a number of children with disabilities.
“Though such activities help children to develop their talents and skills, they are limited to those who have capacity in leadership and music,†said Daryl M. Daño, a Filipino VSO worker and Special Needs Education adviser to the district education department.
“It has also been observed that classroom post-lesson activities and tasks are limited to one-size-fits-it-all-pen-and-paper.
“Children are assessed from answering questions on the chalk board or books, which limit students’ creativity. So, the art contest is providing an alternative menu, which caters for all,†she added.
The theme of the contest was Keeping Us Safe, Fulfilling A Promise.
Winners get medals, a certificate and sh50,000 each. The overall winner, Brenda Namirimu of Kabalega Primary School, won sponsorship from Bunyoro Kingdom.
