WE light candles on so many occasions, birthdays, weddings and even at the dinner table when we want to enhance feelings of romance. But did you know that candles matter as much to Christmas as that spruce tree.

The practice of lighting candles at Christmas started in Germany, which is also the origin of the Christmas tree. Here, four candles were always burned on Christmas Eve as a sign of Jesus’ Advent.

Some people burned candles as a sign of hospitality to Joseph and Mary, while others used them to symbolise the star that guided the magi.

Pagans, on the other hand, had long used candles as a symbol of the sun. But all that aside, Christmas candles have always been a sign that Christ, the light of the world is here.

Even though modern society has sought to bring on this idea with twinkling electric lights, candles still rule the day.
Christmas candles look elegant, mystical and beautiful.

They bring an aura of coziness that not even a thousand electric lights can achieve. They soothe and enlighten the whole atmosphere.

There is nothing more hospitable than a candle lighting up the faces of the dinners who are seated around a table that has all sorts of meats and delicacies. Add the fact that some candles come with nice warm lavender or cinnamon scents and you know why you cannot do without them this Christmas.

You can also give out candles as gifts or to add onto the Christmas decor.
White candles are so common that they cannot enhance that once-in-year essence of Christmas.

Why not try out the candles that have been made in the traditional Christmas colours of green, gold, red or yellow? Banana Boat at Garden City and Quality Supermarket at Old Kampala have the very best of festive candles.

These will blend so well with your ordinary Christmas décor of red balls and gold tinsel on the evergreen tree. Each can burn for three days.

Prices range from sh3,000 a piece to sh4,800. Do you want to try out something more exciting like having floating candles for putting inside the dishes or do you want a green candle shaped like a Christmas tree? You can order your specified candles from Target Candles in Entebbe.

Your orders will be at your doorstep within 24 hours. Christmas candles go for between sh1,500 and sh7,000 at Target Candles.
