Shaggy to rock Kampala in first city carnival

CARNIVALS have been held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and London, England with happy revelers partying in style.

The idea involves several people partying along stretches of streets. However, in Uganda the idea is still foreign. now, thanks to Orange telecom, Ugandans are going to experience it for the first time ever.

The carnival will mark Orange Uganda’s official and final launch to the public.

The fanfare, the latest mobile phone entrant wants Ugandans to revel in, is scheduled for Saturday May 23.

Dubbed Orange carnival, the concert (after party) will be graced by international Jamaican dancehall artiste Shaggy, whom Orange officials say will perform as a special guest artiste.

Billed the first of its kind in Uganda, the carnival will start at 9.00am from Shoprite Lugogo move through the city and end at the Cricket Oval for an after party including the concert.

Others slated to perform include Kenyan singer Nameless, rappers Navio and GNL, Mowzey Radio &Weasal, Sakasi Dance and Acrobat Group.

Although the latter, have a contract with rivals MTN Uganda, Anisha Sekatawa, the Brand and Communications manager, says they will perform at the do nonetheless.

“We are aware of their commitment elsewhere but we signed them up and they agreed to perform,” Sekatawa, said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Whereas the Karnival will be free for anyone to join, the after party will be paid for. Tickets come in two packages; at sh20,000, one gets an Orange sim card, airtime worth sh10,000 and an after party ticket.

For sh80,000, you get an Orange handset, sim card, airtime worth 10,000 and ticket for the after party.

For any of the packages, the buyer is automatically entered into a draw to win a plot of land, Boda bodas, TV sets, and mobile phones among other prizes.

On a gigantic float, musicians, dancers will move through Kampala streets from 9.00am till 4.00pm.

Along the route, spot prizes will be given away including phones, sim packs, T-shirts and airtime. Tickets are on sale at Orange outlets.

Winners of prizes will be announced at the after party. Sekatawa added that although Shaggy has been here countless times, he was only interested in the carnival because he had been at Botswana’s Orange event with a similar arrangement.
