POLITICIANS should become born-again Christians so as to fight corruption, a former minister of local government in the Milton Obote government has said.

Edward Rurangaranga said if politicians accepted Jesus Christ as their saviour, they would carry out their work transparently.

“A saved politician will not entertain corruption. If there is anybody whom I asked for a bribe during my tenure, let them come out and pin me,” he challenged.

Rurangaranga, who is also the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party chairman in Bushenyi district, was on Thursday speaking at the burial of Eliab Kateeba at Katikamwe village in Kyabugimbi sub-county.

Kateeba, 64, who had been the UPC district party secretary, died on Monday at Ishaka Adventist Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

The party president, Miria Obote, described Kateeba as committed and faithful.

This was contained in a condolence message delivered by the UPC district party chairman, William Mukaira.

The district Woman MP, Mary Karooro Okurut, appealed to politicians to tolerate each other’s advice.

“I cannot refuse Rurangaranga’s advice because he is older than me. We should advise one another in a principled manner,” Karooro, who is also the NRM spokesperson, said.

The NRM contributed sh500,000 towards the burial.

The bishop of West Ankole Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Yona Katoneene, disclosed that religious leaders had been getting threatening messages for opposing corruption and homosexuality.
