JESA Farm Dairy has acquired the ISO-130:1999 Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point international certificate on food safety.

The farm manufactures butter, ice cream cheese, pasteurised milk and yoghurt.

The management system was implemented by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS).

It is a systematic preventive approach used to identify potential food safety hazards so that key corrective measures can be taken to eliminate the risk of transmitting hazards in stages of production, processing, packaging and transportation.

Dr. Terry Kahuma, the UNBS executive director, handed over the certificate to James Mulwana, the JESA chairman, in Kampala this week.

“Evaluating hazards associated with food and putting in place effective control measures protects customers against consumption of unsafe products,” said Kahuma.

He said the farm’s acquisition of the certificate was testimony that safety measures had been mainstreamed to ensure the products were free from contamination.

Geoffrey Mulwana, the farm’s director, said the company had invested $2m (about sh4b) in A modern dairy processing plant in Busunju.

“We have developed a processing capacity of 20,000 litres of milk per day. We are investing another $500,000 this year. This will increase the capacity to 30,000 litres per day,” he said.

“With this international certification, we can access clients all over the world,” he added.

because it is an international system. So far we sell our products to two million Ugandans and the British Airways,” he said.
