THE low turn-up of tourists last year has forced the Government to build 30 first-class hotels in the tourist attraction areas. Uganda received only 800 tourists last year, according to tourism minister Serapio Rukundo.

Rukundo said this while meeting Italian tour operators from Sunny Travel agency at the Kampala Serena Hotel recently.

He said the Government would partner with private investors to set up the hotels around national parks and other tourist centres in order to improve their standards.

“We want local people to gain more from the tourism sector,” Rukundo said.
He said the ministry had already identified the targeted areas for the project, adding that local investors were encouraged to participate in the venture.
Michelina Gabrie, the director of Sunny Travel, promised to woo more tourists to visit Uganda.

Suzan Othieno, a sales representative from the Uganda Travel Bureau, said they hosted the team of tour operators to market Uganda in Italy and France.
The team visited national parks and other tourists centres.

Earlier the Sunny Travel team led by Michelina Gabrie handed over assortments of clothes, sewing threads and Vitamin Supplements to UWESO. Michelina handed over the donation to Executive director, Naome Watiti on weekend.
