President Yoweri Museveni has promised to meet all the leaders in the Bunyoro region to discuss land problems.

The chairman of the Mubende Banyoro Committee, a pressure group advocating for the rights of Banyoro in Kibaale district, Kata Musoke, said the meeting will be held on June 15.

The Bunyoro kingdom officials, the political leaders and the members of the pressure group are expected to attend.

The President met nine members the pressure group on Saturday at State House Nakasero.

Museveni had earlier on Thursday asked the group to halt a planned demonstration.

Musoke said the meeting was meant to diffuse tension in the district that prompted the Police to deploy heavily.

Musoke said the President said all people who illegally settled in Kangombe Forest Reserve in Bwamiramira sub-county would be asked to leave the reserve.

Musoke said Museveni also ordered the immediate release of people arrested on Friday by the Anti-riot Police.

Over 12 people were arrested for blocking roads in Kakumiro, Kagadi and Kakindo.

Musoke said the President instructed the Inspector General of Police to investigate land problems in Kijwenge village in Nalweyo sub-county, Kasenyi village in Kakindo sub-county and Muziranduru in Nkooko sub-county in three weeks.

The pressure group argues that over the years, immigrants, mainly from Kigezi, have taken over chunks of land in Kibaale to the disadvantage of the Banyoro.

They are also bitter that their land was allocated to Baganda under the 1900 Buganda Agreement.

The Banyoro have over the years urged the Government to live to its promise to redress the historical mistakes. They want the Government to return the land to the Banyoro and end the influx of immigrants into Bunyoro.
