PRISON officers in the north have been commended for respecting the rights of prisoners. The regional Prisons commander, Alfred Okulu, told the officers to maintain their integrity while on duty.

Okulu was last week addressing senior prison officers from Lango and Acholi sub-regions at a party at Diana Gardens in Gulu Municipality.

The officers were celebrating the promotion of 12 senior colleagues.
Okulu said the prisons had changed from safe custodies to rehabilitation and reintegration centres.

“In the past prisons used to punish the wrong doers, but these days they are used to rehabilitate them,” Okullo said, adding that digging in prison farms was not a punishment.

Representing the LC5 chief Norbert Mao, Charles Okwakalwak, an LC5 councillor and the social services committee chairman, said the district was willing to work with the officers to rehabilitate inmates.
