WESTERN Region got off to a flying start, whipping hosts Mid-North 3-0 in the opening game of the revived MTN Inter Region soccer championship yesterday.

Siraje Bbale opened the scoring for Western, hitherto regarded as underdogs of the competition, 20 minutes into the game at Lango Sports Club. First half ended 1-0.

Mid-North were unlucky as their attempted fight back saw two of their goals disallowed by centre referee Ali Sabila on resumption. Western football team then killed off the game with two more quick scores as Kipson Atuhaire and Matia Okocha stretched final time score to 3-0.

“The win is good for me and it has given me an edge over my opponents. Especially because Western was not fancied to win,” team coach Derrick Banduka noted.

The defeat compels Mid-North to beat Kampala in their next fixture on Wednesday and hope Kampala tames Western in the other preliminary match today for them to keep in contention.
Six teams in two groups are contesting the well-attended tournament which was last held two decades ago.

Northern youth Member of Parliament Denis Hamson Obua presided over the official opening of the week-long meet alongside FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa. MTN has sponsored the event to the tune of sh50m.

  • The council for east and central Africa football associations has offered air tickets worth $200,000 (sh438m) to the clubs due to take part in the regional clubs championships. KCC will represent Uganda at the annual event due in Sudan June 30-July 12, adds Norman Katende.

The association secretary Nicholas Musonye yesterday confirmed that all clubs will get air tickets for a contingent of 25 to the event, whose matches will be played under floodlights. El Merreikh Group and Sudan Television offered a sponsorship of $600,000 (sh1.2bn).

Former Ugandan league champions KCC start action against guest side TP Mazembe of DR Congo on July 1.
