TWO people were killed and another injured during a shoot-out between Local Defence Units (LDU) and Karimojong cattle rustlers in Kitgum district last week. “Four Karimojong warriors sneaked into Abilimino village in Orom sub-county.

This place separates Kaabong district and Kitgum. Being at the boundary, such incidents sometimes happen,” the UPDF 5th Division spokesperson, Capt. Deo Akiiki, said on Sunday.

He said the two people were killed during the pursuit of the cattle thieves. “The armed Karimojong warriors wanted to steal the cattle which were grazing across.

“The two LDU groups mistook each other to be the thieves. They exchanged friendly fire, which led to the death of their colleague, Patrick Anywar Rachele and injured Robert Opio,” Akiiki said.

He added that in another incident, a civilian, George Opio, was killed by a stray bullet. Akiiki said the cattle rustlers managed to escape, adding that the army had information that would lead to their arrest.

The LC3 chairperson of Orom sub-county, Santonino Oringa, said the cattle rustlers had stolen 15 herds of cattle from the community. “The cattle were recovered during the pursuit,” he said.
