THE International Olympic Committee through the World Food Programme WFP has donated sports kit worth $45,000 (about sh97m) to six primary schools in the districts of Gulu, Amuru and Kitgum.

The move is intended to boost and revive sports in the war ravaged region.
Each school received soccer balls netballs table tennis bats, nets and balls; skipping ropes; whistles, volleyball nets and other equipment.

The equipment will benefit an estimated 4,500 pupils in some of the most vulnerable schools in the Acholi region.

“WFP is extremely grateful to the IOC for its generosity toward vulnerable children in Uganda. This equipment will help young people returning home from the camps find positive recreational activities,” Fatai Adegboye, WFP finance and administration officer said at the handover at Acholi Inn.

He said sport makes a big contribution to reducing trauma and can be used a psychosocial treatment for children and pupils who have been traumatised by the LRA war.
