Residents of Tororo county in Tororo district have vowed to support President Yoweri Museveni in the 2011 general elections.

Residents of Tororo county in Tororo district have vowed to support President Yoweri Museveni in the 2011 general elections.
They said during a rally at Tororo county headquarters in Mukuju on Thursday that they wanted to thank Museveni for granting them a district.
The Government recently announced the creation of Mukuju and Kisoko districts from Tororo.
These are part of the 14 proposed new districts being discussed by the parliamentary committee on local government.
If approved, Tororo district will cease to exist. Tororo NRM vice-chairman Ignatius Okongo Okiror said residents of the new district were excited over the matter.
Wearing yellow T-shirts and caps labelled “Mukuju district for NRM†and carrying placards, the crowd chanted praises for Museveni as speaker after speaker lauded the Government.
“Tororo county PWD’s (persons with disabilities) support the NRM and the creation of Mukuju district 100%. Long live Museveni and the NRM,†one of the placards said.
Another one read: “Tororo county women support the NRM and the fourth term and the creation of Mukuju district. Long live the President.â€
Several Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) members defected to the NRM, saying it was a way of thanking Museveni for giving them a district.
Okongo apologised to Museveni for what he called “the erratic behaviour†that the residents exhibited in 2005 while demanding a district.
Campaigning at Mukuju in 2005, Museveni was booed by the crowd for failure to grant them a district.
One of the residents stepped forward holding a rat and vowed to eat it in front of the President to express disappointment.
Okongo said the Iteso started demanding a district in 1998 due imbalances in resource allocation. He added that the Iteso had been marginalised by the Badama for long.
He noted that the Badama have 22 representatives against 11 for the Iteso in the district council. This, he explained, determines how resources are allocated.
Okongo said all the NRM supporters who crossed to FDC at the time because of frustration had pledged to return to NRM.
