THIS Sunday is Father’s Day. This is the time to show your love and appreciation for dad. It may be hard for you to reciprocate the good things your father has done, but buying him a gift would show your appreciation.

However, this calls for careful planning. Gifts that specially appeal to men have a smaller niche on the market compared to women’s. Besides, there are certain barriers that one cannot surpass when buying a gift for dad.

“The rule of thumb in buying a gift for your father is that you either get something he needs but does not have, or one that he can use during his pastime,” says the salesperson from Gifts and More at Garden City in Kampala.

Perhaps the best gift that one can buy for an urban working class father is a genuine Italian suit. It is expensive, but can be affordable if you put money together with your siblings’.

Every time he wears it to a board meeting, or cocktail party, he will always remember you. Genuine Italian suits cost about sh900,000 at La Vie Boutique, Grand Imperial Hotel.

An urban working class father would appreciate a laptop or luxury wristwatch. Wristwatches are available at Kyakuwa General Enterprises and Radha Jewellers at Sheraton Hotel.

A business card holder, leather briefcase and desk organizer are also ideal gifts for Father’s Day. A business card holder goes for at least sh15,000 at Aristoc Booklex. If your dad is a football fanatic, a DStv decorder or a jersey with his favourite team’s badge would please him.

There is a wide range of jerseys on sale at Katumwa Sports Centre on Ben Kiwanuka Street. If dad is into golf, a polo shirt would make his day.

Some dads love barbecues and often hang out in places where there is plenty of muchomo. You could get him a barbecue grill so that he celebrates the day at home with his family and friends.

Game Stores at the Lugogo Mall sells electric and char- coal barbecue grills. Many men are obsessed with gadgets. Why not drop by a shop and pick a flash pen, wireless mouse, universal remote control, i-pod, personal digital assistant, wireless headphones or digital camera for dad?

You can also buy him the latest Blackberry phone from Décor Plus on Nkrumah Road at sh750,000. Personalised gifts are more appealing.

You could give dad a coffee mug engraved with his photograph and name. Lasting Impressions in Kampala does engraving for special occasions.

You can also shop at Woolworths at Garden City or Mr. Price for a bathrobe, slippers, or pajamas. If you plan to shop on a shoestring budget, a leather wallet would do just fine.

One goes for about sh25,000 in many shops. If dad is not a teetotaller, you could take him out for a beer in the evening to wind up the day in style.
