SPORTS state minister Charles Bakkabulindi has ordered Lira district officials not to let the Akii-Bua stadium be taken over for other activities.

Bakkabulindi said at the closure of the Inter-regional soccer championship at Lango Sports Club last week: “Akii Bua stadium is a historical site. I will work hard to make sure it is not encroached on.”

The stadium was built in 1972 in honour of Uganda’s only Olympic gold medalist John Akii-Bua.

The late Akii-Bua achieved the feat at the 1972 edition of the world’s biggest sporting bonanza. But the stadium is under threat from the nearby Lira Hospital. The hospital authorities have lined up the stadium for its expansion. They have fronted an alternative venue for the stadium. The hospital team argues that the stadium is redundant for long spells every year.

The stadium formerly hosted the Akii Bua Memorial championships under the Uganda Athletics Federation and other sports activities. But the memorial event has since been moved to Namboole.

Bakkabulindi’s remarks in Lira come at a time when sports facilities around the country are increasingly being encroached on.
