Rujumbura MP Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi has blamed the riot by students of Makobore High School in Rukungiri on the teacher who caned their colleague.

Mark Mugyenyi, a Senior Four student, was shot dead by the Police last Sunday during a demonstration by S4 students. The students rioted after their colleague was caned by the teacher in-charge of the dining for eating a double share of food.

The head teacher, Sepharts Turyabahika, requested the Police to guard the teacher after students threatened to lynch him if he did not apologise to them.

When the students tried to attack the teacher at around 9:30pm, the Police shot in the air, killing one and forcing others to flee.

“It was unfortunate to lose a student and the whole blame is on the teacher who beat up a student. There is a ban on caning and corporal punishment in schools,” Muhwezi said.

He was addressing over 250 student leaders from Rukungiri district at a workshop to curb down strikes and promote safety measures on rampant fire outbreaks in schools at Hotel Riverside on Saturday.
