UNBS, crack down on suppliers of fake Always

EDITOR—Counterfeits are increasing on the Ugandan market and doubtless to say, most of these goods have serious health implications.

My concern is on the increased supply of counterfeit Always sanitary pads. Some time back, the manufacturers of always pads warned customers on TV that these counterfeits had infiltrated the market.

This was good enough because we were alerted and I believe the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) was alerted too.

However it is sad to note that the supply of these pads has increased even in some popular shops.

What hurts even more is that they are the same price as the genuine ones and it is quite hard to notice the difference until you have opened the pack. The receipts of such traders make it clear that “goods once opened are not returnable”!

I understand these pads are cheaper for the retailers. This is at the expense of the consumers’ health. Many women in Uganda use Always pads.

As with all counterfeits there is a price to pay. These pads are harmful to the users in the long run. I request the UNBS and the Ministry of Health to crack down on the suppliers of these counterfeit sanitary pads and confiscate them and have the traders prosecuted.

This could be a step in averting gaenacological complications and also serve as a warning to traders selling other counterfeits, especially those likely to put people’s health at risk.

Always should organise a campaign to alert consumers about the specifications of their genuine products.
