EIGHT pupils from the same school in Iganga district have been made pregnant allegedly by the same teacher. Muzamiru Menya, the district education officer, told journalists recently that the affected pupils are from Nawaningi Primary School, a Universal Primary Education (UPE) school, in Bulamagi sub-county.

“The girls have since been sent away from school as investigations start,” Menya said. However, The New Vision talked to some pupils from the school, who said their head teacher and staff were protecting one of their own.

“They hurried to send away the pupils so that the teacher cannot be exposed,” a pupil said. According to Menya, the headmaster, Moses Kitinyo, had organised a medical check up after rumours had circulated about the status of the girls.

“Seven of them are from Primary Seven and the other from Primary Six. The school management committee is aware and working with the education department on the matter,” Menya said.

Asuman Kyafu, the district chairman, attributed the matter to laxity in the local inspectorate of schools. “The district education officer has been away for three months. This shows how things are run in the education sector,” Kyafu said.

“I found out about the Nawaningi incident as I toured schools last week. I then wrote to the chief administrative officer instructing him to embark on an investigation. We are yet to establish whether they were impregnated by the same person as alleged,” Kyafu said.

Last year, 10 pupils from a UPE school in Ibulanku sub-county were found pregnant .
