TO build something from nothing is the stuff that dreams are made of. That came to pass when the recently formed Arts Press Association, (APA) comprising critics, writers and columnists on local arts and culture, held the first ever, APA monthly awards at Club Rouge on Thursday evening.

The Moonberg-sponsored monthly awards, which will be presented to befitting local personalities in the fields of fashion, music, film, theatre and dance, before a grand awards ceremony at the end of the year, saw GNL Zamba voted maiden APA artiste of June.

He closely prevailed over a strong shortlist that included, Blu 3, Henry Tigan, Cinderella Sanyu (Cindy) and Julianna Kanyomozi. It was easy to see why GNL added another shining item to his prized assets.

“He has revolutionarised rapping in Luganda, making it loveable. He has massive appeal. It is easy to see why he is the first local rapper who has concert slated for Hotel Africana.

GNL is by far the biggest revelation of the year, and he continues to churn out thought- provoking and witty lines in his mother language,” Moses Serugo, one of the three judges said, after receiving nominations from the over 50 registered APA members.

Blu3, were first runners-up followed by Cindy.
Gilbert Mwijuke, the APA organising secretary, said the world over, arts are as big if not popular than politics and sports. It was only in Uganda where the case is different.

The association and awards are a way to propel the arts to where they rightly belong, he said.

You can fault GNL for exhibiting a little egotism in his acceptance speech: “I’m no wannabe, I’m simply all they wanna be...” he said.

The Chilli Galz put up a scintillating performance as did Leila, formerly of the Dream Galz troupe.

Moonberg Lager’s representative Veronica Kagona’s words were most cheered. “As a brand, Moonberg is ready to grow with APA.

From what we see, the APA monthly awards have the potential to eclipse other awards currently running in the country.”

The sight of top executives from telecoms giants, Warid Telecom and Orange in the crowd, keenly following proceeding that night, was an indication that the future of arts journalism in this country is bright. We danced to it.
