THE hip hop City Beat readers’ party at Club Silk last Friday was not the usual party where you have artistes sharing hugs with their fans. This was more of a battle of words and these are artists who have many words.

When one fan asked about the beef among hip hop artists, there was a heated exchange.
The strife is mainly between GNL Zamba, currently the most popular hip hop artist, and Navio.

Navio first claimed he did not know what was going on. According to Navio, GNL and he are not even competitors seeing that they belong to different leagues. GNL had a different explanation.

For him, all the hate must have started when he decided to be GNL and not Klear Kut. And when he rubbed it in by claiming to be the king of Ugandan hip hop and the money set in, trouble started.

Navio remembered when it all started, that GNL Zamba disrespected him while performing at a show in Mbarara.

“I do not understand Luganda well, but someone translated for me what GNL had said,” he said.

GNL said anyone who has seen him disrespecting Navio on any stage should come forward. He said he does not understand the claims about who owns what lyrics.

“Navio called me and I wrote my verses while he wrote his,” GNL explained.

Most of the fans called for a ceasefire but the artists and the two camps for a time seemed tranquil. So when GNL Zamba offered an autographed CD to Emmanuel Ayebare who had come all the way from Mbarara, Navio did the same.

Whatever the intentions, there were boos of “beef, beef!” throughout the club.

Lyrical G, probably the most respected hip hop artist, calmed the situation while The Mith simply said “beef is simply part of hip hop”.

When female hip hop artists Saint C.A summed it up in one statement: “Boys will be boys and beef is overrated”, the real fun time kicked off.

Lyrical G performed songs off his coming album, while Navio and The Mith took control of the crowd; making them clap at a single sign and wave whenever they deemed fit.

GNL Zamba made meaning of the dance floor when he was joined on stage by fans, especially on Omwana wa Baaba. He shook the club with Kikakane.

And how the girls moved those waists! GNL also introduced a new rapper, Mato Mungi, to the fans.

UNIQue and Saint C.A did not perform but simply teased the fans with samples of their varied talents.
