THE United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) is to help more internally displaced people in northern Uganda resettle in their communities.

Dr. Anna Tibaijuka, the UN-HABITAT executive director, on Friday said the move was intended to facilitate the return of the displaced people who have suffered as a result of the 20-year war in the region. She was addressing a press conference at Serena Hotel in Kampala on her return from Lira where she commissioned 64 houses constructed by the programme.

She said in addition to the 64 houses for teachers, UN- HABITAT had also constructed 40 houses for the vulnerable people and three office blocks in Lira, Dokolo and Apac districts. She said the communities would receive machines to ease construction, adding that UN-HABITAT had so far spent about sh800m.

Tibaijuka said the project was jointly carried out with the Government, UNICEF, WFP and Good Earth Trust.
