Adwari sub-county in Lira district has received food aid from the Government. Resident district commissioner Joan Pacoto on Saturday said the Office of the Prime Minister had supplied 140 bags of beans and 360 bags of maize flour to feed the starving residents.

Pacoto said this was the Government’s response to her appeal for food. She added that they need more food to avert more death in Adwari and Olilim sub-counties.

Pacoto said about 30,481 households were in need of food in Otuke sub-county. “Famine has affected most parts of Lira, but Otuke seems to be more hit than other areas,” she said.

She said the famine was caused by the floods that destroyed most crops last year and the drought that followed. The Government, Pacoto said, had released sh30b to secure food for the famine-affected people in eastern and northern Uganda.

Adwari LC3 chairman Bosco Olwit Dagama said 11 people had so far died in the sub-county as a result of hunger.
