THE Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Henry Luke Orombi, has decried the increasing Anglican youth defecting to other churches. Orombi attributed this to the failure by the church leaders to address the problems affecting the youth.

“There is a very big problem in the Church of Uganda. In all the archdeaconries I have visited, the youth are running away because they are hungry.

“It is like a mother who can not cook food for her children. Can you blame your children for running to the neighbours to beg for food?” Orombi asked.

He urged pastors and lay leaders to ‘feed’ the young people with the right spiritual food so that they do not run away to other churches and join cults.

Orombi made the remarks during a sermon at the Busoga Diocesan Youth Day celebrations at Christ’s Cathedral in Bugembe on Sunday.

Orombi is conducting his first official pastoral tour of Busoga Diocese during which he has laid foundation stones at various archdeacons and presided over Holy Communion.

Flanked by Bishop Michael Kyomya and the clergy, Orombi hailed the bishop for initiating a spirit of team work which has resulted into positive achievements for the church.

The archbishop challenged the youth to avoid short-lived worldly pleasures which can lead their lives to total destruction, adding that there was hope for a better future in the young people. He urged Christians to work hard to avoid laziness.

Orombi criticised homosexuality, human sacrifice and other immoral acts that have swept society and also lashed out at older men for preying on young girls.

“I pray that parents look after their daughters because they are the mothers of the nation,” he said. The Government Chief Whip and MP for Butembe County, Daudi Migereko, called on the clergy to work with the Government to popularise its programmes.
