KAMPALA City Council (KCC) on Friday impounded 100 head of cattle that were loitering in the city.

The operation, which was conducted in the Central and Kawempe divisions, was geared at eliminating stray animals from the city centre.

KCC spokesperson Simon Muhumuza said: “We carry out the exercise every week. It is part of our operation to get rid of stray animals.”

He added that the impounded animals were taken to the Kampala Abattoir.

The KCC law enforcement officers, who carried out the operation, said the owners of the animals tried to attack them during the exercise.

“The animals eat flowers and trees. Their owners will be prosecuted and heavily penalised,” Muhumuza said.

On Jinja Road, traffic was temporary paralysed as the officers chased the cattle on the highway. Some animals ran in the middle of the road, blocking vehicles. Others tried to enter the nearby buildings, causing commotion, Muhumuza added.

Last week, KCC veterinary officer Emilian Ahimbisibwe warned that animals found loitering in the city would be auctioned.
