MULAGO Hospital’s neurosurgery unit has received a sh42m facelift from the Jovan and Mary Kiryabwire Foundation as well as a donation of equipment worth $1m (about sh2b) from Duke University in the US.

Dr. John Baptist Mukasa, the deputy head of the unit, said the renovation was supported by friends and the family of the late Prof. Jovan Kiryabwire, who was one of Uganda’s first neurosurgeons.
He died in January 2004 from cancer.

The unit admits patients suffering from head and neck injuries, brain diseases and infections, tumours, and congenital abnormalities in children.

The unit’s bathrooms, floors, windows, plumbing and lighting systems were renovated and the building painted. The donated life-support equipment will be installed in the High Dependency Unit, which handles critically-ill patients.

Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire said an award for interns would be started in his father’s honour.
