Education minister Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire has welcomed the intervention by the African Development Bank (ADB) in the education sector and economic development in Uganda.

“ADB intervention is timely and substantial both in terms of supporting the macro government policy on human and manpower development in the country and by providing the much-needed infrastructure to meet the objectives of equitable access to quality post-primary education,” Bitamazire said.

She made the remarks at the launch of the ADB Uganda Post-Primary Education, Training Expansion and Improvement (Education IV) project on Friday at Protea Hotel in Kampala.

She said the ADB Education Project IV would expand and rehabilitate the education infrastructure to enhance equitable access to post-primary education through the Universal Secondary Education programme.

“ADB is one of the key partners who have come a long way with the Government to support the programme,” she said.

Bitamazire added that the objectives of the education sector could not be achieved without stakeholders like ADB, in partnership with the ministry, investing in the programme.

Benedict Kintu, an official in the ADB Uganda Field Office, said the five-year project worth $91.9m would benefit over 11,000 students in 59 schools and the 12 that are to be built.
