The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has impounded a consignment of smuggled items used in the manufacture of local liquor.

The seven consignments include five containers of neutral spirit originating from South Africa, each estimated at sh70m in taxes, and two consignments of hardware estimated at sh30m.

“The consignments were diverted for home use without payment of taxes. Five of the seven containers had 80 drums, each with 250 litres of neutral spirit used in making waragi,” Stephen Kimpwedde, a customs officer, said.

He explained that the total revenue loss is estimated at sh380m in taxes.

Five consignments were delivered directly to the owner’s premises, Kimpwedde said.

“The two containers were said to contain hardware items, which included galvanised pipes and bath tabs.”

Kimpwedde said eight truck drivers have been arrested over the incident.
