Otunnu is no cause for excitement

EDITOR — I want to welcome Dr. Olara Otunnu back home, as well as extend an invitation to other Ugandans like Anne Mugisha to come back home and struggle from within, if they are to achieve what they want.

EDITOR — I want to welcome Dr. Olara Otunnu back home, as well as extend an invitation to other Ugandans like Anne Mugisha to come back home and struggle from within, if they are to achieve what they want.

The opposition is miscalculating the 2011 elections. By considering to front Otunnu as their flag-bearer, the opposition is bound to lose miserably. There is an adage: “the devil you know is better that the angel you don’t.”

Otunnu has already received a negative welcome from the Mengo government. Mengo asked him to apologise to the kingdom for the wrongs former president Dr. Milton Obote did to the kingdom.
There are no votes for Otunnu from Buganda unless he apologises.

But even then, he is not the best person to apologise for Obote’s mistakes when Obote did not bother to apologise.
Otunnu might get the shock of his life as one minister put it.

He has been away for a long time and most people in the young generation between 18-30 years as well as well-known peasants do not know him well enough. According to statistics, these are the groups that determine the winner of an election due to their big numbers.

Otunnu’s party, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) still has a lot to do to win the elections. UPC is viewed as a party for the old, tired and retired.

I want to assure the opposition that the likes of Dr. Abed Bwanika, John Sebaana Kizito, Nassar Sebaggala and Norbert Mao are better candidates for the opposition compared to Otunnu.

Ugandans know them because they have been participating in the country’s politics. The opposition should front a person who is locally popular other than Otunnu.
He is only popular abroad. Otunnu is being introduced to most Ugandans as if he is not a Ugandan.
