THE National Forestry Authority has auctioned close to 400 lots of timber worth sh60m. “Some of the auctioned timber was impounded on the Uganda-Sudan border as it was being smuggled to southern Sudan where it on demand,” Paul Lunakwita, the forest authority’s Nakawa timber-yard supervisor, said recently.

He added that illegal timber trade was on increase despite efforts put in place to contain the vice.

“Illegal timber harvesting, which was common in Buganda, is now being practiced by all regions,” he said.
“We encourage timber dealers to legalise their business to avoid inconveniences.”

Lunakwita explained that auctioned timber was not of the best quality because illegal timber dealers harvest it at night and in hurry.

The timber species auctioned at Nakawa included Mvule, Mahogany Kirundu, Nkuzanyana and Kirundu.
