OVER 60 primary school teachers in Kyenjojo district have been sacked over absenteeism and drunkenness. The Kyenjojo district LC5 chairman, James Byamukama, told journalists at his office on Monday that the affected teachers had been habitual absentees.

Most were found drunk in trading centres during working hours, he added. Byamukama said he had opened up a war in the district to fight lazy teachers and head teachers who contribute to poor performance in the education sector.

He attributed the misconduct of school staff to poor inspection of schools. “School inspectors are supposed to visit three times a term but in Kyenjojo, they do not visit even once.”

The Government would not continue to pay lazy inspectors who fail to monitor the performance of school staff, he added.

Byamukama further disclosed that 30 more head teachers in the district had been interdicted for failing to account for Universal Primary Education funds.

Kyenjojo chief administrative officer, Christine Amal, said the district lost sh73m through failure to account for UPE funds.
