Mulago Hospital staff has petitioned Parliament Speaker Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi over the recent ‘barbaric’ arrest of the hospital’s director.

In a petition presented to the Speaker by Dr.Margaret Mungherera, the hospital’s psychiatrist consultant, the staff said the arrest was a humiliation, and it defamed the individual, profession, and the institution.

The petition signed by 104 staff members called for a public condemnation of the act to ensure that health workers, while on duty, should never be arrested in such a manner.

“Such a saga causes hurt and loss of confidence to the individuals as well as clients of the institution and the public. It further exacts shame and loss of morale to the other health workers in the country,” said the petition.

Mulago Hospital director Edward Dumba was arrested on July 16 by court bailiffs over non-payment of sh20m arising from court awards.

Jamada Lubanga, a former staff of Mulago Hospital, sued Dumba over unlawful dismissal from duty.

Butabika Mental Hospital also disproved Dumba’s allegations that Lubanga was mentally sick.

The petitioners accompanied by Dumba, want the court bailiffs who carried out the arrest to be arrested.

The Speaker promised to assign a relevant committee to investigate the matter, saying by the time of the arrest there was a pending appeal in the Nakawa Magistrate’s Court.
