THE transport ministry has declared paper driving permits invalid effective this month.

This has follows the expiry of a three-year grace period given to the last batch of the paper driving permits holders by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

Face Technologies, a South African-based firm, was contracted by the Government in 2005 to issue computerised driving permits to replace the paper ones.

Charles Muganzi, the transport ministry permanent secretary, said the paper driving permits would only be used for conversion to computerised ones within five years after expiry. “Beyond this period, they will be null and void according to the Traffic and Road Safety Act of 1998,” he said.

Face Technologies first operated in Kampala, Wakiso, Mpigi, Luweero, Nakasongola, Mukono and Kalangala districts from January 2005. The rest of the districts were still being served by URA until it rolled out in August 2005.
