Firms unveil cost-saving water purifier

A NEW water purifier, CrystalPur, has been launched in Kampala. The gadget is promoted by Appropriate Technology (AT) Uganda and Enterprise Works/VITA, with funding from Diageo Foundation.

A NEW water purifier, CrystalPur, has been launched in Kampala. The gadget is promoted by Appropriate Technology (AT) Uganda and Enterprise Works/VITA, with funding from Diageo Foundation.
“CrystalPur water filter is convenient and cost-effective,†Dr Rita Laker Ojok, the Executive Director of AT Uganda, said. She added that the gadget protects the environment. “For less than the cost of one bag of charcoal, one can get 7,000 litres of pure, disease-free, drinking water for the family,†she said.
Michael Oketcho, AT Uganda’s project manager, said the water filter was designed using technology from Netherlands.“It removes bacteria and parasites from contaminated water, thus preventing water-borne diseases.â€
“The simple-to-use gadget produced from India doesn’t need electricity or chemicals and has no effect on the taste of water,†he added.
The system uses an element that filters between four to six litres of water per hour. CrystalPur has been subjected to mandatory laboratory tests by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards to confirm its effectiveness.
It has also been approved by Kampala City Council to be of “quality standard, safe and effective in the filtration process.†Diageo Foundation, a charity funded by the owners of the East African Breweries, recently purchased 3,000 units of CrystalPur, which it donated to 200 primary and secondary schools in Kampala and Wakiso districts..
