THE Police have arrested two suspected car thieves in Kampala. The men are believed to be leaders of a racket that has been terrorising the city and its suburbs.

The Police identified the suspects as Eric Tumwesigye, 30, and Jackson Ouma, alias John Were.

Tumwesigye is a resident of Nyanama Church Zone, while Ouma is a resident of Mpererwe in Kawempe Division.

Some of the tricks employed by the car thieves include hiring vehicles for self-drive, which they sell after forging the log books.
The men have also been conniving with owners of garages and washing bays.

The New Vision on September 5 reported that a new wave of car thefts had began in Kampala and its suburbs, with the robbers employing a variety of tricks to steal vehicles.

Some of the robberies are carried out by gun-totting thieves who take advantage of isolated places.

The robbers reportedly trail the motorists or wait for them at the gates to their homes and demand the car keys.
The trick has been reported mostly in the upcoming suburbs with isolated houses.

Henry Kalulu, the Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson, yesterday told a weekly press briefing in Kampala that the Force had intensified vigilance on car thefts.

He appealed to the public to report their stolen vehicles to the Police.

Kalulu disclosed that Tumwesigye had admitted to hiring several vehicles, which he sold in Jinja and Masaka districts.

He said Ouma, who impersonates a marketing manager, was a senior trainer of the thieves.

Kalulu added that Ouma recently stole a tipper lorry valued at sh13m from a man identified as John Bogere. He said investigations into the thefts were ongoing.
