THE $700,000 (sh1.4bn) artificial turf donated to Uganda by FIFA has at last arrived in the country. But a tax of sh50m will have to be cleared before the turf is transported to the FUFA technical centre in Njeru near Jinja.

“It has arrived, we are working on the tax documents,” National Council of Sports general secretary Jasper Aligawesa explained yesterday. “We are going to spend about sh50m but we are still waiting for the final papers.”

The turf will be laid on one of the three playing fields at Njeru.
Domestic football governing body FUFA turned to Njeru after the failure to agree with Nakivubo stadium.

State minister for sports Charles Bakkabulindi had two years ago asked the federation to lay the turf at Nakivubo, but both parties failed to agree.

This caused a delay in sending the artificial turf to the country. Government will be paying the tax from its vote as the law on waiving taxes on sports donations is yet to come into effect.

Aligawesa said that the money spent is in the same vein like that for the hockey artificial turf which was donated by the International Hockey Federation and Olympic solidarity in 2007.
