FOOTBALL governing body FUFA yesterday released a squad of 41 women footballers picked from schools and clubs across the country to start training for their forthcoming U-20 World Cup qualifiers due here on October 24.

Federation vice president in charge of women soccer, Florence Nkalubo, released the list for the first leg qualifier against Rwanda, in the Germany 2010 cup finals at the weekly FUFA press conference at Mengo.

Nkalubo noted that the squad would start non-residential training at Kisubi Technical Institute this weekend before a final squad would be picked for residential training at the same place starting October 14.

“I’m happy, at long last, we have started to see women football. Our girls have waited for so long and others had to leave the country for DR Congo where they are now playing for the national team there,” Nkalubo noted.

Nkalubo’s comments triggered a clash with FUFA publicist Rogers Mulindwa, who told the vice president that the federation was reluctant to compete internationally because there was no platform to pick players for the women national team.

Women team coach Majidda Nantanda and her assistant Haruna Kebba will handle the team with assistance from Cranes tactician Robert Williamson.

The team will gauge their readiness for the qualifier against Kenyan teams during the annual Independence Cup at Nakivubo October 9-11.
