UNRA, culverts at Cleveland Primary School are blocked

Editor—I wish to commend the European Union for its support to Uganda for the construction of the Kampala Northern ByPass.

Editor—I wish to commend the European Union for its support to Uganda for the construction of the Kampala Northern ByPass. However, I would like to inform the Ministry of Works and the Uganda National Roads Authority that the culverts at Cleveland Day and Boarding Primary school are blocked. There is no channel for water to flow towards the Kyebando roundabout and as a result, whenever it rains, all the houses there are flooded. Please come to our help, desilt the culverts and widen the drainages before the El-Nino rains set in.

Ed—UNRA’s response: Some of the culverts on the bypass are blocked by plastic bottles and buveera. This is not only happening on the bypass but also to the drainage systems on other roads in and around Kampala.

The contractor has been concentrating on completion of major works and was not cleaning drainages that will eventually be handed over to KCC and UNRA. These drainages will be desilted and where possible UNRA and the contractor will widen the water channels. This is a process that has to be done regularly as routine maintenance for the new road.
