Govt gets 5,000 acres for palm

The Government has secured 5,000 acres of land for a palm tree growing project on Buvuma Island. The district secretary for production, Lawrence Sserwanga, told journalists on Tuesday that the government is looking for the remaining 10,000 acres before it begins the project. He said the district was working with the agriculture ministry and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to secure the land. Sserwanga said the Malaysian government, through IFAD, is funding Uganda to implement the project. He said Buvuma’s swampy soil type, which favours palm tree growing. Sserwanga, however, ruled out a possibility of forceful eviction of people from their land. A similar project was started some years ago on the Kalangala islands and many farmers have reportedly benefited from it.

Soroti, Sweden mayors partner

SOROTI Municipal Council has signed a partnership agreement with Leksand Municipality in Sweden to address environment, entrepreneurship and local development issues. Soroti mayor, Alfred Aruo, and Lady Mayor of Leksand, Ulrika Liljeberg, signed the agreement at Golden Ark Hotel, Soroti, on Wednesday. Aruo thanked Sweden for identifying and partnering with his municipality. The two municipal authorities agreed to write a project proposal to be sent to the Internal Community of Local Democracy in Sweden before January 15, 2010. The Swedish mayor was accompanied by the coordinator Leksand Commune, environment officials, teachers and students.

SACCo members get sh20m

TWENTY million shillings has been given out to members of Butagaya savings and credit cooperative society (SACCO) under the Bonna Bagaggawale (prosperity for all) scheme. The money received from the Micro-Finance Support Centre was distributed to the 16 beneficiaries by the SACCO manager, David Kyangwa, on Wednesday. Kyangwa commended the Government for the support and called on those who received money to put it to the intended use and endeavour to pay back so as to attract more funding from the Government. Moses Walyomu, the LC III chairman, warned the beneficiaries against using the funds to buy alcohol or marrying more wives, warning that those who fail to adhere to the rules would face the law.
